Digital vs. Analog Display: Which is Better For Seniors?

Both digital and analog display can make for senior friendly watches. There are a few different advantages as well as disadvantages when comparing digital vs analog display watches for the elderly.

For one, if a senior grew up using analog watches, that might be what they prefer in terms of appearance and style. However, when it comes to ease of use, digital watches are often easier to read.

This is especially true for elderly patients with dementia, who may have an even more difficult time making sense of analog watches, even if they prefer them. For elderly individuals with dementia, digital watches are the best choice.

There are some exceptions though. Some digital watches feature additional information like the date on the screen, which can add confusion. If you’re choosing a watch for a patient with dementia, avoid digital watches with extra information on the screen -a simple watch that tells just the time is all that is needed!

If you’re looking for a watch for a senior who is still quick as a whip, it’s simply a matter of their own preference – do they prefer the convenience of a digital watch, or enjoy the style of an analog watch more?

What Makes a Watch Easy to Read?

Many individuals shopping for seniors look for easy to read watches. But what exactly makes a watch “easy to read”? There are a number of factors at play, including:

  • Strong Display Contrast. Regardless of whether you choose digital or analog, you’ll want to make sure you find watches with a strong display contract – ideally, either black numbers on a white background or white numbers on a black background. High contrast between the numbers and background will make the time easier to read.
  • Large Face Size. Large face watches are easier to read, simply due to the fact that the larger sizes allow for larger numbers and characters. Opt for larger face watches for when shopping for senior citizens.
  • Large Numbers. Whether you decide to go digital or analog, you’ll still want to look for watches with large number displays to help the senior clearly identify the time. The larger and clearer the face characters are, the better (this advice applies when shopping for clocks for the elderly as well).
  • Simple Characters. Some watches use elaborate numerical designs and patterns to provide a more unique look, but for the elderly, these extra embellishments just make the watch harder to read. Instead, choose plain, simple numerical styles that are easy to read. Avoid roman numerals, as these are unnecessarily confusing to interpret, especially for elderly people with dementia.
  • Backlight. Many seniors prefer a watch with some kind of backlight, making the watch easier to read in low-light settings. Button backlights can be a nuisance, since one needs to hold the button down the entire time to emit the light. Backlights can vary in quality and even-ness, with many complaining of uneven backlights (Timex’s “indiglo” is one solution with a more even blue-green backlight).

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Watch For a Senior

In addition to identifying which watches are easy to see and read, there are other criteria you will want to keep in mind when buying the best watches for seniors. While not all of these factors may be important to you, seniors may value certain features over others depending on their needs:

  • Water Resistance. Is the person you’re shopping for forgetful and may not remove the watch before washing? In that case, a water-resistant watch is a good idea. Many watches are water-resistant up to 30 meters (or about 100ft). Unless you’re doing deep-sea diving, that should be plenty!
  • Ease of Setting Time. From tiny pin dials to small buttons, setting the time on a watch is never easy, especially for elderly people with arthritis or limited mobility. When possible, try to choose a watch where it’s not too complicated to set the time.
  • Band Style & Clasp. Consider the difficulty of putting on and off various band styles (silicon, leather, stretch, metal and buckle clasps). Also consider comfort and chafing.
  • Date and Extra Info. Some digital watches include the date and day of the week in addition to the time. This information may be beneficial and helpful to those with dementia – however, on the flip side, all that extra information on a watch head may confuse the viewer. When in doubt, we’d suggest opting for less information for a clearer, less cluttered watch face.
  • Talking Watches. Some watches actually can be made to speak so that the person wearing the watch can hear the time audibly. However, if the senior or elderly person is hard of hearing, talking watches may not prove very useful.
  • Battery Life. Generally, seniors will appreciate watches that have a long battery life, since changing the battery is quite the chore. Look for watches with solid battery life. Generally, digital watches tend to have better battery life than analog watches due to less energy consumption.
  • Weight. Seniors may have different preferences for watch weight – some will prefer a lightweight watch, while others may prefer the durability of a heavier, more heavy-duty watch.
  • Buttons. Some watches have extra buttons you can tap and twist for expanded options, stop-watch functionality, and more. For most seniors, these features are unnecessary and may even add a degree of confusion. For elderly people, simplicity is best! However, for sport-enthusiasts, added features like a stopwatch may serve as fun bonuses.
  • Medical Alerts. Some “Smart Watches”, like the Apple Watch, have health tracking capabilities and can even act as a medical alert device with Fall Alert capabilities. Seniors might need your assistance setting up these watches.
  • Health and Fitness Tracking: Some “Smart Watches” also boast fitness features such as step tracking and wellness features such as heart rate monitoring among other health metrics that might be of interest to seniors.

Keep in mind that if your senior is not very mobile, you’ll want to avoid watches that regularly and continually require the tapping of small buttons, as this is a challenge for those with arthritis.

Buttons are a common issue when shopping for seniors, and you’ll want to always opt for larger and fewer buttons, whether you’re shopping for senior-friendly radio, coffee maker, or microwave!

What Is “Quartz Movement”? A quartz watch is a battery-powered watch that uses a piece of quartz crystal to keep time. To create power in a quartz watch, the battery sends an electrical current through a small quartz crystal, electrifying the crystal to create vibrations. The vibration keeps an almost perfectly constant frequency, allowing for very precise time keeping. “Quartz movement” is an often-advertised feature of quartz watches, and has become relatively standard in modern watches.
